SPAIN TRAVEL GUIDE

Spain

Energetic cities, quiet coastlines and food worth slowing down for.

Spain is far more than beaches and tapas: Barcelona, Madrid and Andalusia form a route of vivid contrasts, while Valencia adds modern architecture and the green Turia Gardens. Finish with either the wild northern coast or an island break in Mallorca.

THE ROUTE · DAYS 1–6

Barcelona & Madrid

Barcelona, days 1–3: Visit the Sagrada Família early, walk the Gothic Quarter and spend the evening in Gràcia. La Cova Fumada and El Xampanyet are useful starting points for Catalan food; check current opening hours.

Madrid, days 4–6: Choose the Prado or Reina Sofía, cross Retiro Park, then explore Malasaña or Lavapiés. Mercado de San Miguel is photogenic but tourist-oriented. Look for a local “menú del día”; Casa Dani is known for tortilla.

THE ROUTE · DAYS 7–10

Andalusia

Use Seville as a base for the Alcázar, cathedral and an evening tapas crawl. Córdoba works as a day trip; Granada deserves at least one night. Reserve Alhambra tickets well ahead through the official seller. In summer, sightsee early and again in the late afternoon.

Food tip: Order small plates and move between several bars — tapas becomes a route through the city.

Historic architecture in Seville

City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia

THE ROUTE · DAYS 11–12

Valencia

The old town, Central Market and Turia Gardens connect history, everyday life and modern architecture. The City of Arts and Sciences is especially striking in late-afternoon light. Paella is traditionally a lunch dish; El Palmar has many specialist restaurants. Compare prices and reviews before choosing menus beside major sights.

Two possible extensions

Green coastline of Asturias

Asturias & the north coast

Dramatic shores, green mountains, cider houses and quieter towns. Ideal for nature, a road trip and milder weather.

Quiet cove in Mallorca

Mallorca

Palma, the Serra de Tramuntana and small coves make a varied island week. Book rental cars early and visit popular bays in the morning.

Food, shopping & budget

Affordable groceries

Mercadona, Lidl, Aldi, Carrefour and Día are widely available. Markets are good for fruit, cheese and regional products, though central tourist markets are not always cheaper.

How to order

A lunchtime “menú del día” often offers the best value. Pintxos are especially common in the north; tapas may be a complimentary bite or an ordered portion depending on the region.

Daily budget

Budget: about €80–120. Comfortable: €150–230. Upscale: €300+ per person/day, excluding travel to Spain.

Transport & safety

High-speed trains are usually more convenient than domestic flights between major cities. Compare Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo España, and book popular routes early. Within cities, metro, buses and walking are usually the easiest combination.

Pickpocketing around metros, stations and landmarks is the main concern in Barcelona and Madrid. Keep bags closed and in front, never leave valuables unattended on beaches, and avoid unsolicited petitions, bracelets and distraction attempts. Emergency number: 112.
