Regions and highlights
Cape Town
Table Mountain, Cape Peninsula, Kirstenbosch, Bo-Kaap, museums and city beaches. Stay flexible: when the mountain is clear, prioritise it.
Winelands
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl connect landscape, architecture and food. Use a driver, shuttle or organised tour for tastings.
Garden Route
Hermanus, Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma need at least four nights. Whale viewing is seasonal.
Kruger & Greater Kruger
Kruger offers excellent self-driving and park camps; private reserves focus on guided drives and exclusivity. Allow at least three nights.
KwaZulu-Natal
Drakensberg, iSimangaliso, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and the coast work best as a separate second journey.
Johannesburg
Important for history and contemporary life: Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and guided city experiences. Arrange transport and day plans ahead.

Transport and road trips
Rental car
Review full cover, excess, tyres/glass, one-way fees and breakdown support. Keep doors locked and leave nothing visible.
City journeys
For evenings and unfamiliar areas in Cape Town, use reputable app-based rides or hotel-arranged transfers. Do not improvise routes through isolated areas.
Safari driving
Observe Kruger speed limits and gate times. Stay inside the vehicle, never feed animals and allow generous time for short distances.
Food and restaurants
- Cape Town: Bree Street, Sea Point, Woodstock and Kalk Bay for modern cooking, fish and independent cafés.
- Cape Malay: discover bobotie, curries, samoosas and koesisters in local restaurants or contextual food tours.
- Winelands: lunch menus often offer the best experience-to-price ratio; reserve popular farm restaurants.
- Road trip: farm stalls, padstals, bakeries and harbour restaurants make useful stops.
- Braai & shisa nyama: community food culture best experienced with local context.
Roughly 10–15% tip is customary in restaurants when service is not included.

Safety without euphemisms
- Ask your accommodation for current local routes and areas to avoid.
- Do not walk through unfamiliar districts after dark; keep vehicle doors and windows closed.
- Use planned transfers from Cape Town airport and on urban highways after dark.
- In a breakdown, call the rental company or roadside assistance and move to a safe place when possible.
- Use valuables discreetly and choose ATMs inside banks or shopping centres.
- From a mobile phone use 112 for general emergencies; police 10111, ambulance 10177.
Entry and health
- Visa rules depend on nationality, purpose and duration; check Home Affairs before booking.
- Review passport and blank-page requirements, plus current documents for minors.
- Kruger is in a malaria area. Discuss individual prevention with a doctor well ahead.

Is South Africa suitable for a first independent trip?
Yes, with careful routing, transfers and accommodation. Cape Town, Winelands and Garden Route combine well; current local safety advice remains essential.
Self-drive or guided safari?
Kruger is excellent for self-driving. Guided drives add knowledge and visibility from open vehicles. A mixture is often ideal.
Can I combine Cape Town and Kruger in two weeks?
Yes, by domestic flight. Allow at least four Cape Town nights and three to four safari nights plus transfer buffers.
Which supermarkets are affordable?
