Chile
Santiago, Atacama and Patagonia — a narrow country of immense distances.
Chile at a glance
Best time
Patagonia: November–March. Central Chile: spring and autumn. Atacama: year-round, with cold nights and extreme high-altitude conditions.
Ideal duration
18–21 days for Santiago, Atacama and Torres del Paine. Add extra regions only with three to four weeks.
Transport
Domestic flights bridge the long north–south distances; modern buses, transfers and rental cars handle local journeys.
Santiago, Valparaíso & wine
Allow three to four nights for Lastarria, daytime Bellavista, museums, markets and viewpoints. The metro is useful; choose vetted rides after dark. Valparaíso rewards with hills and street art but requires extra street awareness. Use transfers for Casablanca or Maipo wine visits.

Atacama · 4–5 days
San Pedro de Atacama is the base for Valle de la Luna, salt flats, geysers and stargazing. Do not book high-altitude trips on day one: acclimatise gradually, hydrate and choose reputable operators.
Day and night temperatures differ sharply. Sun protection, warm layers and a realistic schedule matter more than packing in every tour.
Patagonia & Torres del Paine
Puerto Natales is the park gateway. Confirmed refuges or campsites are mandatory for the W and O circuits; buy park entry at least 24 hours ahead. Day hikes also need weather contingency.
Wind, cold and rapid weather changes occur even in summer. Stay on marked trails, obey fire rules and check the daily route report.

Food, supermarkets & budget
Try empanadas, pastel de choclo, cazuela, seafood and completos. Lider, Jumbo, Unimarc and Santa Isabel are widespread. Chile is not cheap by regional standards; budget early for flights, park bookings and Patagonia accommodation.
Safety & natural hazards
- Watch for phone and bag theft in central Santiago, Valparaíso, Calama and San Pedro.
- Leave nothing visible in rental cars; do not put valuables in bus overhead racks.
- Avoid demonstrations and night driving on highways in Bio-Bío and Araucanía.
- Follow SENAPRED alerts for earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, severe rain and wildfires.
- Declare all fresh food on arrival; Chilean agricultural controls are strict.
