Colombia
Bogotá, Medellín, coffee mountains and Cartagena — a journey of contrasts that deserves careful planning.
Colombia at a glance
Best time
December–March and July/August are often drier. The Caribbean stays hot; high-altitude Bogotá is cool and changeable year-round.
Ideal duration
14–18 days for Bogotá, the coffee region, Medellín and Cartagena; 18–21 days with Tayrona.
Money & transport
Colombian peso. Carry cards plus a small cash reserve. Domestic flights often make more sense than overnight road travel.
Key regions
Bogotá · 3–4 days
La Candelaria, the Gold Museum, Botero Museum and Monserrate form the classic introduction. Add Chapinero, Zona G and Usaquén for markets and restaurants. Take the first day slowly at 2,600 metres and use vetted transport after dark.
Medellín · 3–4 days
The metro and cable cars connect much of the city. Choose responsible Comuna 13 tours that involve residents. El Poblado is convenient; Laureles is often calmer. Guatapé works as a long day trip.
Cartagena · 3 days
Explore the walled city early and after sunset, visit Getsemaní respectfully and plan around midday heat. Agree prices clearly before taxi, carriage or beach services.

Coffee region
Salento and Cocora Valley are famous, while Filandia, Pijao and smaller fincas spread visitors more evenly. Stay three to four nights and choose a farm tour explaining cultivation, harvest and fair work.
Pereira, Armenia and Manizales are useful gateways. Mountain roads are slow, so leave generous transfer time.
Tayrona & the Caribbean
Santa Marta is the base for Tayrona National Park. Check capacity, opening hours and temporary Indigenous rest periods on the official site. Visitor accident insurance is required; respect marked trails, heat and strong currents.
Minca offers cooler mountain air and birdlife. Palomino is relaxed, but sea currents can be dangerous.

Food, restaurants & supermarkets
Try arepas, Bogotá ajiaco, bandeja paisa, empanadas, Caribbean fish with coconut rice and fresh fruit juices. Book popular restaurants at weekends. Éxito, Carulla, Olímpica and D1 are widespread; D1 and Ara are often cheaper for water, snacks and breakfast.
Budget
Set lunches and local buses are inexpensive; boutique hotels, domestic flights and parks raise costs. Prices change, so pay cards in COP rather than dynamic home-currency conversion and use ATMs in secure locations.
Safety — check current advice
Foreign travel advisories cover several border, conflict and south-western regions. Do not choose routes from imagery alone: verify each destination and transport corridor immediately before booking and during the trip.
- Avoid demonstrations, military and police facilities, and areas covered by official warnings.
- Keep phones and jewellery discreet; use vetted taxis or apps after dark.
- Never leave food or drinks unattended and be cautious with invitations from strangers.
- Prefer daytime travel on main routes; fly when local conditions are uncertain.
- Seek medical advice on yellow fever, mosquitoes and altitude; carry insurance including evacuation.
Your journey. Your story. Your horizon.
Colombia rewards curiosity — and planning that respects local realities.
