Plan the journey
Costa Rica is compact but slow: winding roads, rain and bridges increase travel time. Allow 12–15 days for San José, La Fortuna, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. Add Tortuguero, Osa or Guanacaste only with three weeks.
Best time
December–April is drier on the Pacific and heavily booked. May–November is greener with frequent afternoon rain. Caribbean weather follows different patterns.
Transport
A rental car provides freedom; shuttles reduce stress. A 4×4 helps on some secondary roads and in wet season but is not always essential.
Trip length
12–15 days for the classic route, 18–21 days with Osa, Tortuguero or the Caribbean.
San José & La Fortuna
San José works for an arrival night, museums and Mercado Central. La Fortuna is the base for Arenal hikes, hanging bridges, waterfalls and hot springs. Stay three nights and choose certified activity operators.
The volcano is often cloud-covered; do not measure the trip by a clear summit. Check trail, weather and volcanic restrictions locally.
Monteverde
Monteverde is cooler, windier and mistier than the lowlands. Guided morning walks improve the chance of seeing quetzals, toucans and smaller forest species. Two or three nights cover a reserve, night walk and unhurried forest time.
Use professional operators for bridges and zip-lines; closed shoes and a light rain jacket are essential.
Manuel Antonio & other coasts
Manuel Antonio combines short forest trails, wildlife and beaches. Buy entry through official channels, start early and keep food packed away. Never feed or crowd animals.
Guanacaste is drier and more resort-focused. Puerto Viejo brings Caribbean culture; Tortuguero offers canals and seasonal turtle viewing. The Osa Peninsula is remote, biodiverse and more demanding logistically.

Food, supermarkets & budget
Sodas are local, usually affordable restaurants. Try casado, gallo pinto, ceviche, patacones and fresh juices. Larger and local supermarkets help with breakfast and snacks. Costa Rica is expensive for Central America: budget for rental insurance, park entry, tours and tips.
Safety & health
- Leave nothing visible in cars, use guarded parking and avoid isolated beaches after dark.
- Rip currents are a real risk; respect warning flags and local advice.
- Use strong mosquito protection against dengue and chikungunya, and regionally malaria; seek route-specific medical advice.
- Tap water is safe in many places, but ask locally in remote areas.
- Allow for changing weather, slippery trails and limited mobile coverage.
