Mexico Travel Guide: Mexico City, Oaxaca & Yucatán

MEXICO · METROPOLIS · CULTURE · CARIBBEAN

Mexico

Mexico City, Oaxaca cuisine, Maya sites and Yucatán cenotes in one realistic itinerary.

Plan the journey

Mexico rewards selection rather than speed. Choose Mexico City with Oaxaca or the Yucatán for a first trip; combining both needs at least 16–20 days and usually a domestic flight. Security conditions differ sharply by state and route, so current official advice belongs in every plan.

Best time

November–April is generally drier. Rainy season brings short heavy showers; monitor hurricane season on the Caribbean coast.

Transport

Use app-based or authorised taxis in cities and reputable intercity buses; avoid night driving and improvised remote routes.

Trip length

10–12 days per region, or 16–20 days for the capital, Oaxaca and Yucatán.

Mexico City

Allow four to five nights for the historic centre, Chapultepec, the Anthropology Museum, Roma/Condesa and Coyoacán. Teotihuacán is an early-start day trip. The altitude can cause fatigue, so take the first day slowly and hydrate.

Established taquerías, market halls and contemporary Mexican restaurants cover every budget. Choose busy stalls with freshly cooked food and clean preparation areas.

Oaxaca

Oaxaca combines colonial streets, Indigenous traditions, craft and one of Mexico’s great food cultures. Try mole, tlayudas, memelas, tejate and regional chocolate. Stay three to four nights for Monte Albán, markets and nearby villages.

Use reputable local operators and check for road blocks or regional restrictions before excursions.

Cenote in Yucatan

Yucatán & Caribbean coast

Mérida is a comfortable base for Uxmal, cenotes and haciendas. Visit Chichén Itzá early. Valladolid works between stops; Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and smaller towns offer alternatives to large resorts.

Use permitted cenote entrances, keep sunscreen out of the water and follow conservation rules. Sargassum and weather can change beach plans.

Suggested 17-day route

  1. Mexico City – 5 nights
  2. Oaxaca – 4 nights
  3. Fly to Mérida or Cancún
  4. Mérida – 3 nights
  5. Valladolid – 2 nights
  6. Caribbean coast – 3 nights

Food, supermarkets & budget

Comidas corridas, taquerías and markets cost less than hotel restaurants. Convenience shops are useful for snacks; supermarkets cover water, fruit and breakfast. Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres. Costs rise significantly on resort coasts, and tips plus admission fees add up.

Safety & health

  • Check state-by-state travel advice before every leg; official bodies advise against travel to specific areas.
  • Avoid overnight road travel, use registered transfers, keep valuables discreet and never leave drinks unattended.
  • Use strong mosquito protection against dengue, Zika and regionally malaria; seek travel-health advice for the exact route.
  • Do not drink tap water and replace fluids and electrolytes in heat.
  • Carry travel medical insurance including repatriation.
