Canada Travel Guide: Toronto, Québec & Rocky Mountains

CANADA · CITIES · ROCKY MOUNTAINS

Canada

Toronto and Montréal, historic Québec, the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific in one travel blueprint.

Plan Canada well

Canada is larger than a single trip. First-time visitors should choose either the east—Toronto, Niagara, Montréal and Québec City—or the west—Vancouver, Banff and Jasper. To combine both, fly between regions and allow at least three weeks.

Best time

May–June and September are comfortable. July and August are busy and expensive. December–March suits winter cities and snow trips.

Distances

Plan realistic driving days, include rest days and do not compress both coasts into two weeks.

Entry

Many air travellers need an eTA. Apply only through the official Government of Canada website and check current rules.

Toronto, Niagara & Ottawa

Toronto brings waterfront views, the Islands, Kensington Market, the Distillery District and remarkable neighbourhood food. Stay three to four nights. Niagara works as a day trip, but an overnight visit and Niagara-on-the-Lake create a calmer experience.

Ottawa adds Parliament Hill, major museums and the Rideau Canal. Trains are often easier than driving between Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and Québec City.

Montréal & Québec City

Montréal revolves around neighbourhoods, design and food: the Plateau, Mile End, Jean-Talon Market and Old Montréal. Try bagels, poutine and contemporary Québécois cooking.

Québec City is compact and historic. Old Québec, Terrasse Dufferin, Petit-Champlain and Montmorency Falls fit into two or three days. Basic French is appreciated.

Vancouver, Banff & Jasper

Vancouver combines the ocean, Stanley Park, Granville Island and Asian-influenced food. Continue through Calgary or Kamloops into the Rockies. Banff, Lake Louise, Yoho and Jasper deserve seven to ten days.

Reserve accommodation, shuttles and campsites early. Keep safe wildlife distances, secure food and follow current trail, weather and wildfire information.

Two useful routes

Eastern Canada – 12 days

  1. Toronto – 3 nights
  2. Niagara – 1 night
  3. Ottawa – 2 nights
  4. Montréal – 3 nights
  5. Québec City – 3 nights

Western Canada – 14 days

  1. Vancouver – 3 nights
  2. Kamloops or Okanagan – 1 night
  3. Jasper – 3 nights
  4. Icefields Parkway – 1 night
  5. Banff/Lake Louise – 4 nights
  6. Calgary – 2 nights

Food, supermarkets & budget

Food halls, bakeries, diners and picnics cost less than full-service restaurants. Supermarkets and public markets cover breakfasts and hiking days. Tips, local taxes and parking often appear in addition to listed prices. Skip cars in major cities; compare rental cars, park shuttles and national-park fees in the Rockies.

Safety & health

  • Check wildfire, smoke, road closure and evacuation information daily in warmer months.
  • Never feed or crowd wildlife; follow official distances and bear-safety rules.
  • Remote areas may lack mobile coverage and rapid assistance. Share routes, carry offline maps and emergency equipment.
  • Buy travel medical insurance; treatment can be expensive for visitors.
