Bali, Java and Komodo – three worlds in one journey

AN ISLAND JOURNEY WITH DEPTH

Indonesia at a glance

Indonesia is not a destination for a rushed checklist. Thousands of islands, religions, languages and landscapes demand a clear choice. For a first trip, Bali, Java and Komodo National Park form an excellent route: temples and rice terraces, volcanoes and cultural cities, then dry island chains and remarkable bays.

Best time to visit

May to October are generally the drier months for Bali, Java and Komodo. July and August are especially busy and expensive. May, June, September and October often offer the best balance of weather, price and calmer places. Rainy season does not mean constant rain, but it can disrupt transfers and volcano hikes.

Ideal trip length

Allow at least 14 days, ideally 18 to 21. Build in buffers between islands: ferries, domestic flights and road transfers often take longer than maps suggest.

An ideal 18-day route

Days 1–5 · Bali: Ubud and beyond

Start gently in Ubud. Visit rice terraces and smaller temples early, book a cooking class or guided bicycle tour, and leave one day unscheduled. Sidemen or Munduk are better than the busy centre for quieter nights. Temple clothing should cover shoulders and knees; sarongs are often provided.

Days 6–10 · Java: Yogyakarta, Borobudur and Bromo

Fly or travel overland to Yogyakarta, the base for Borobudur, Prambanan, batik workshops and Javanese food. Then combine trains and a trusted driver towards East Java. For Bromo and Ijen, use reputable guides, check weather and volcanic activity, and avoid tight onward flights.

Days 11–14 · Flores and Komodo

Labuan Bajo is the base for Komodo National Park cruises. Choose a licensed boat with life jackets, radio, a clear route and credible reviews. Observe Komodo dragons only with a ranger. Take currents seriously when snorkelling and never enter the water alone.

Days 15–18 · A calm finish in South Bali

Finish in Sanur, Jimbaran or Uluwatu. Sanur is convenient and calm, Jimbaran suits seafood evenings, and Uluwatu offers cliffs and surf beaches. Canggu and Seminyak have more nightlife, but significantly more traffic.

Food: specific recommendations

In local warungs, nasi campur, gado-gado, soto ayam, rendang und satay are reliable starting points. In Yogyakarta try gudeg ; on Bali, sate lilit und nasi ayam are local classics. Well-known options include Warung Bu Mi in Canggu, Made’s Warung in Seminyak, Locavore NXT in Ubud for a special tasting menu, plus Mediterraneo oder La Cucina in Labuan Bajo. Check current opening hours, concept and recent reviews before visiting.

For inexpensive shopping, use Indomaret und Alfamart for water and snacks, Pepito und Grand Lucky for a broader selection, and local markets for fruit. Do not drink tap water; choose sealed bottles or verified refill stations. At street-food stalls, choose places where food is cooked fresh and visibly hot.

Budget and accommodation

Rough daily costs per person excluding long-haul flights: budget €35–60, comfortable €80–150, upscale from €200. Domestic flights, private drivers and Komodo cruises raise the average. Small guesthouses and homestays often offer the best value. Before booking, check air conditioning or fans, noise, hot water, true walking distance and recent guest photos.

Transport without unnecessary stress

On Java, trains are comfortable and more predictable than long drives. On Bali, trusted drivers or ride-hailing apps in supported areas are often safer than a rental scooter. Traffic is chaotic; avoid night drives and questionable low-cost ferries. Combine inter-island flights and boats only with generous buffers.

Safety, health and respect

  • Ride scooters only with a valid licence, helmet and suitable insurance; inexperienced riders should avoid them.
  • Check local alerts daily for volcanoes, earthquakes, heavy rain and rough seas.
  • Carry valuables discreetly, use ATMs inside banks or malls, and never leave drinks unattended.
  • Bring mosquito protection, sunscreen, a travel medical kit and insurance that includes repatriation.
  • Drug laws are extremely strict. Visit religious places respectfully; Bali has special restrictions during Nyepi.

Check before departure

Entry rules can change at short notice. Passports generally need at least six months of validity on entry and departure. Since October 2025, international-airport arrivals have required a digital arrival card. Always verify binding details with the relevant authorities shortly before departure.
